Gifts and wills

Thank you for considering including a gift in your will to the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail.

1.) What is a Gift in a Will?

A Gift in a will is a donation made to the organisation as part of your estate, to be paid after your death.

2.) How large does a donation have to be, to be included in my will?

Any donation, large or small, is gratefully accepted, as it all contributes to allowing Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trails to maintain and develop the Trail for future generations.

3.) Is it best to leave a dollar amount or a percentage of the value of my estate as a Gift in Will?

Generally, a percentage works best as it is an easier way for the executors to manage the estate, and you do not have to make adjustments to your will if your situation changes.

However, we are grateful for either type of donation and want you to make a donation that is easiest for you.

4.) What is the recommended wording to use in my will?

I_____________ leave free of all duties) to Alps 2 Ocean Charitable Trust, Registered Charity number CC48977

  • a gift of____% of my estate
  • or  $__________

to be used for general purposes.

I direct that the receipt from a Proper Office holder at Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trails shall be a complete discharge to my executors.

5.) Do I have to have a written will?

To make a gift in your will you do need to have a written and witnessed will. Anyone over the age of 18 should have a will to ensure your wishes are carried out and to make it easier for the loved ones you leave behind.

6.) Why should I have a will?

A written and witnessed will ensures that your wishes are carried out and the executors have clear directions. Any one in New Zealand with assets over $15,000 must have a will or when you pass away, the estate will be considered Intestate and the Probate process will need to be processed through the High Court with High court costs. This can make a difficult time even more difficult for loved ones you leave behind.

7.) What is Probate?

Probate is the process completed when a decedent leaves assets to distribute, such as bank accounts, real estate, and financial investments. Probate is the general administration of a deceased person's will or the estate of a deceased person without a will.

8.) What does Intestate mean?

Intestate refers to dying without a legal will. When a person dies intestate, deciding how their assets will be distributed becomes the responsibility of a probate court. An intestate estate can also be one in which the will presented to the court was deemed to be invalid.

9. What is an Executor?

An executor is a person or Trustee named in the will or an administrator, if there is no will, to complete the probate process. This involves collecting the deceased's assets to pay any remaining liabilities on their estate and distributing the assets to beneficiaries.

10.) What is a Beneficiary?

A beneficiary is a person (or entity) who is designated to receive the benefits of property owned by someone else. Beneficiaries often receive these benefits as part of an inheritance.A beneficiary can be designated in the documents relating to a life insurance policy, a retirement account, a brokerage account, a bank account, and other financial products. It's important to designate beneficiaries for your financial assets so that they can be distributed according to your wishes when you pass away.

11.) What will Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trails use my donation for?

We will use your donation to maintain and improve the Trail to ensure it is a resource available to future generations

12.) What is a recognition program?

A recognition program is our way to show our appreciation for your pledged donation while you are still here for us to say Thank you. We want to use the recognition program to keep your memory alive for the riders who come after you for generations to come.

There are various ways we can show our appreciation and we would be happy to discuss this with you.
