Bike, hike or drive – you can go with Lakeland Explorer, Twizel!


Our shuttle service offers local transport for passengers as well as bikes (yours or ours – we also do rentals) and luggage. We do pick ups, drop offs, or you can book a scenic driving tour complete with guide commentary.

Specialised scenic tours are also available for small groups, and we can provide shuttle services for your wedding or function.

We also work with photographers and will take you to the best locations to capture stunning photographs of the Mackenzie landscape.


Lakeland Explorer, conveniently based in Twizel township, offers daytime and evening bike rentals and organises supported cycle trips in the Mackenzie region.

Daytime bike rentals are available at Twizel Market Square and the Mackenzie Country Hotel. Cycle around Twizel and explore the local trails, or use our shuttle service to go further afield. We’ll drop you off to explore a section of the famous Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail or to enjoy a relaxing spin along one of the picturesque Mackenzie Country hydro canals.

Our shuttle service also includes tour commentary and offers stops at scenic local attractions including Lake Pukaki, Lake Ohau and Lake Ruataniwha, High Country Salmon farm and cafe and New Zealand Alpine Lavender organic lavender farm and gift shop.

Evening bike rentals are available at the MacKenzie Country Hotel until 9pm. Enjoy Twizel’s long, warm summer evenings by cycling around the town or on forest trails along the picturesque Twizel River.

Another lovely evening ride is from Twizel to the shores of Lake Ruataniwha (3km south of Twizel).
All bicycle rentals include a comfortable, quality bike, with a variety of sizes and styles available. Rentals also include a carrier bag, safety equipment, information and maps.

If you’re interested in organising a group cycling trip, contact us to arrange group bookings and supported cycling journeys. We are flexible and can help groups wanting to arrange a special trip, including transport to and from the trails.


Treat yourself to a fabulous adventure. Lakeland Explorer scenic group tours are specially designed so that small groups can see and enjoy even more of the beautiful Mackenzie Country.

Visit lakes, historic hydro canals, salmon farms, and more, or join us at night for a stargazing tour and view the magnificent southern skies of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. We welcome group bookings for supported cycle trips – for example, cycle the beautiful Pukaki and Ohau lakeside sections of the Alps 2 Ocean trail.

We can be flexible for groups wanting to arrange a special trip including transport to and from the trails.
Tours depart from Twizel and can be customised to suit your group’s interests, time table and other needs.

The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is a grade 2-3 (easy to intermediate) cycle trail. There are a variety of trail surfaces. Riders are advised to take certain essentials with them (e.g. first aid, repair kit, water, food). Parts of the trail pass through alpine environments, where conditions can change.

Located in the South Island of New Zealand, halfway between Christchurch and Queenstown, is the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. It is recommended that you start your ride from Aoraki/Mt Cook - though there are numerous access points along the trail from which to start or end your ride.
